Canadian Association for Photographic Arts (CAPA) Competition Submissions
A selection of images submitted by Camera 35 St. John’s members for CAPA competitions during the season indicated. These entries showcase talent in nature, fine art, portraiture, and creative categories, meeting CAPA’s standards for technical excellence and artistic impact.
The 2023-2024 season continued Camera 35’s legacy of excellence in national competition, with our members achieving an impressive collection of Gold, Silver, Merit, and Honour Awards. This year’s results reflect the extraordinary talent within our club and the dedication of our photographers to producing compelling and award-winning imagery.
Lisa B Sells and Valerie Knight led the way, each securing a Gold Medal for their outstanding images A Mouth Vole and Sunset Swim. These striking photographs demonstrated a masterful use of light and composition, capturing the beauty of the natural world with remarkable artistry.
In the Silver Medal category, Joe Chase was recognized for No Room, a powerful and evocative image that resonated strongly with the judges. Jim Stacey received a 1st Merit Award for Striding Amidst Starfields and Blue Skies, a testament to the club’s continued strength in creative and technically excellent photography.
The 3rd Merit Awards this year celebrated the exceptional work of Lesleyanne Ryan, Lisa B Sells, and Terry Day, whose images The Crown, Ofra Harnoy and Mike Herriott, and Wonderful Nights Under the Lights in Yellowknife were among the most highly ranked in competition.
A diverse selection of images received Honour Awards, showcasing the broad range of talent within Camera 35. This year’s recipients included Ian Winter, Michael Winsor, David Brophy, Valerie Knight, Joe Chase, Lesleyanne Ryan, Jim Stacey, and TA Loeffler. Standout works such as Bald Eagle Attack, Polar Bear Tenderness, Sheer Determination, and Torngat Mountain Spiritual Light reinforced the club’s ability to capture moments of incredible beauty, emotion, and energy.
In addition, Joe Chase’s No Room was Selected to Represent Canada, an extraordinary honour that places this image among the finest in the country.
While this season saw fewer awards than in previous years, it was a testament to the high level of competition across Canada. Camera 35 remains incredibly proud of all members who participated and challenged themselves in this year’s national contests. Each submission represents the passion and artistic excellence that defines our club. Congratulations to all entrants for their achievements and for continuing to push the boundaries of photographic storytelling!
