Canadian Association for Photographic Arts (CAPA) Competition Submissions
A selection of images submitted by Camera 35 St. John’s members for CAPA competitions during the season indicated. These entries showcase talent in nature, fine art, portraiture, and creative categories, meeting CAPA’s standards for technical excellence and artistic impact.
The 2022-2023 season was an outstanding year for Camera 35, marked by an incredible nineteen Gold Medals, along with multiple Silver and Bronze Medals, Merit Awards, and Honour Awards. The depth and diversity of photographic talent within the club were once again showcased at the national level, with a remarkable range of images receiving recognition.
Leading this year’s achievements, TA Loeffler, Paul Drajem, Michael Winsor, Christine Thorne, Cindy Marshall, Joe Chase, Elizabeth Noftall, Valerie Knight, Lesleyanne Ryan, Eric Bartlett, Judy Ash, Tina O’Rourke, Lisa B Sells, Mike Wilkshire, Ian Winter, Geoff Whiteway, Danny Squire, Duane Mills, and Karen Chappell all secured Gold Medals for their exceptional work. Stunning images such as A Ski in the Park, After the Storm, Arctic Glow, Bonavista Harbour, Breakfast at Daybreak, Electrifying Sunset, and Emerald Eyes captivated the judges with their technical excellence and creative vision.
Silver Medals were awarded to Duane Mills, Declan Flynn, Lisa B Sells, Terry Day, Joe Chase, and Lesleyanne Ryan for their compelling imagery, including Dancing to Celebrate Indigenous Culture, Newfoundland’s Oldest Agricultural Practice, Smack, and Tornado Narrowly Misses Oklahoma Town. Michael Winsor received a Bronze Medal for a remarkable series featuring Arctic Glow, Cox Cove Falls Sunrise, Mom Stop Shaking, My Protector, and Wintery Sunset with Momma.
Merit Awards were presented to Carol Ann Ryan, Lesleyanne Ryan, and Joe Chase, with Upside Down Kind of Day, Prairie Skies, and Smack standing out in the highly competitive field. Lesleyanne Ryan and Cindy Marshall also received 2nd and 3rd Merit Awards for Prairie Walker, Tornado Narrowly Misses Oklahoma Town, Twister, The Clouds of Zeus, and Urban Fox.
The Honour Awards this year were particularly diverse, recognizing Michael Winsor, Lesleyanne Ryan, Joe Chase, Carol Ann Ryan, Lisa B Sells, Evan Foote, and Elizabeth Noftall for their outstanding imagery. Caught in the Act, Foggy Shores, Mothers Protection, Wake Up Mama, Coastal Peaks, and The Ice Fjord were among the celebrated works, demonstrating the club’s wide-ranging talent across landscapes, wildlife, and documentary photography.
With such an impressive collection of awards, 2022-2023 was one of the most successful years for Camera 35 in recent memory. The competition across Canada was fierce, making these achievements even more significant.
