Canadian Association for Photographic Arts (CAPA) Competition Submissions
A selection of images submitted by Camera 35 St. John’s members for CAPA competitions during the season indicated. These entries showcase talent in nature, fine art, portraiture, and creative categories, meeting CAPA’s standards for technical excellence and artistic impact.
The 2021-2022 season was another exceptional year for Camera 35, with our members earning an impressive number of top awards in national competition. This season saw seven Gold Medals, a Silver and Bronze Medal, multiple Merit Awards, and a strong showing in the Honour Awards, reinforcing the club’s reputation as a leader in photographic excellence.
Leading the way, Declan Flynn, Tina O’Rourke, Elizabeth Noftall, TA Loeffler, David Hiscock, Michael Winsor, and Lesleyanne Ryan all secured Gold Medals for their stunning work. With images such as Eternal Breach, Heavenly Reflections, It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere, Pipers Hole Bridge, Self Portrait, The Atlantic Coast, and The Road to Everest, these photographers demonstrated a mastery of light, composition, and storytelling.
Michael Winsor earned a Silver Medal, with an impressive collection of images including Humpback Whale Breach, A Rainbow in the Storm, Dangerous Waters, Green Point Lighthouse Twilight, and Puffin Landing. Greg Bolger’s The Legend of Water Street brought home a Bronze Medal, capturing a unique perspective of St. John’s.
The Merit Awards recognized Lesleyanne Ryan and Michael Winsor with 1st Merit distinctions for The Road to Everest and Puffin Landing, while Geoff Whiteway, Tina O’Rourke, David Hiscock, and Declan Flynn earned 2nd Merit Awards for their compelling and dynamic imagery. Terry Day and Marek Bromberek also received 3rd Merit Awards for Weightless and X-Ray Vision, rounding out a strong showing in this category.
The Honour Awards were particularly diverse this year, recognizing photographers such as Lisa B Sells, Elizabeth Noftall, Carol Ann Ryan, and Lesleyanne Ryan for their artistic achievements. Standout images included Atlantic Puffin Gliding, The Diamond Ring, Reflections of a Palace, Fire Storm, and Supercell Sunset, showcasing the club’s incredible variety of photographic styles.
With multiple Gold Medals, strong representation in the Honour and Merit categories, and an outstanding level of artistry displayed across all entries, 2021-2022 was yet another fantastic year for Camera 35. Congratulations to all members who participated and brought home well-deserved recognition in this highly competitive national arena!
