Canadian Association for Photographic Arts (CAPA) Competition Submissions
A selection of images submitted by Camera 35 St. John’s members for CAPA competitions during the season indicated. These entries showcase talent in nature, fine art, portraiture, and creative categories, meeting CAPA’s standards for technical excellence and artistic impact.
The 2020-2021 season was a spectacular year for Camera 35, with members achieving remarkable success in national competition. This year saw an impressive six Gold Medals, multiple Merit and Honour Awards, and an extraordinary number of images Selected to Represent Canada—a testament to the club’s continued excellence.
At the forefront, Trevor Wragg, Tina O’Rourke, Terry Day, Philip Crocker, Lesleyanne Ryan, and David Hiscock each earned Gold Medals, with standout images such as Ice Queen, Newtown Bonavista Bay, Spirit in the Sky, Stage Reflections, and Wild Nunavut. These stunning works showcased the beauty of nature, the Arctic, and the human connection to the environment.
The 1st Merit Awards recognized Trevor Wragg, Terry Day, Elizabeth Noftall, and Lesleyanne Ryan for their exceptional entries, with Ice Queen, Spirit in the Sky, Weathering the Storm, and Wild Nunavut capturing the judges’ attention. David Hiscock’s Winter Fun was awarded a 2nd Merit, further emphasizing the diversity of talent within Camera 35.
One of the year’s highlights was the selection of five images to represent Canada in international competition. Trevor Wragg’s Ice Queen, Michael Winsor’s Iceberg Coast, Lesleyanne Ryan’s Wild Nunavut, Elizabeth Noftall’s Weathering the Storm, and Carol Ann Ryan’s Winter’s Night at the Battery all received this prestigious distinction.
The Honour Awards this season celebrated outstanding work from Michael Winsor, Lesleyanne Ryan, Geoff Whiteway, David Hiscock, Eric Bartlett, Duane Mills, and Elizabeth Noftall, among others. Standout images such as Autumn River, Mothership Landing, Tornado Genesis, and Symmetry demonstrated the breadth of skill and artistic vision within the club.
With an incredible number of high-ranking awards, 2020-2021 was truly a banner year for Camera 35. The club’s success on the national stage reflects the dedication, talent, and passion of its members. Congratulations to all photographers whose work was recognized in this outstanding season!
