Camera 35 St. John’s is a volunteer-driven photography club based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, with a rich history dating back to the early 1950s. Officially founded in 1979, it boasts a membership of nearly 100 photography enthusiasts from across the province. The club offers bi-weekly meetings from September to June, fostering learning, collaboration, and creative growth in photography. Prominent figures such as Ray Tooton, Maurice Wilansky, Ern Maunder, and Gerald S. Doyle are said to have contributed to its legacy.
Our meetings provide opportunities to share images, learn from quick tips, and discuss photography topics. Members engage in CAPA competitions, Show and Tell, and occasional in-club contests, ensuring a dynamic and interactive experience. Meetings welcome first-time visitors as guests.
The club also organizes exciting photography outings tailored for members to practice their skills in real-world settings and have a lot of fun. These outings explore various genres such as portraiture, wildlife, landscapes, street photography, and architectural studies, offering hands-on learning and opportunities to connect with fellow photographers. Social gatherings often follow outings, fostering camaraderie and discussion about the day’s highlights.
Annual membership fees support activities, with updates and events shared on our official calendar. Join us to explore, capture, and connect with the vibrant photography community of Camera 35.
All members are encouraged to share photos with the club. After all, a photography club is about sharing your work, getting feedback, and learning. Most meeting agendas include plenty of time for Show and Tell and Critic’s Corner.
One of the many benefits of joining Camera 35 St. John’s is participating in competitions through Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) and in-club competitions. Our club is one of almost 90 CAPA member clubs across Canada!
Outings take place throughout the year and include many interesting and sometimes exclusive locations. Photography themes vary, including landscapes, portraits, sports, event, macro, and nature. Every year we plan a fun and engaging weekend photography trip!
Guest speakers share their work and adventures through captivating stories and discussion. The club has been fortunate to host many well known and international photographers with exceptional portfolios, including Joe McNally, Phil Penman, Jason P Howe, and Paul Zizka.
